چکیده

Computing education has permeated virtually all disciplines, expanding learning with new technology and an updated definition of literacy that includes computational thinking. As opportunities for multi-disciplinary courses that include computing increase, so do the challenges placed on faculty to develop such courses and the required computing expertise needed to teach them. This paper defines an approach for leveraging the distributed expertise of faculty across disciplines and institutions in a variety of ways to facilitate cross-institutional and multi-disciplinary education where computing is among the disciplines. Two prototype courses that use this approach are described and evaluated, lessons learned are discussed, and potential future course collaborations are presented.

Teaching, Learning and Collaborating through Cloud Computing Online Classes

Knowledge of parallel and distributed computing is important for students needing to address big data problems for jobs in either industry or academia; however, many college campuses do not offer courses in these areas due to curriculum limitations, insufficient faculty expertise, and instructional computing resources. Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide an opportunity to scale learni...

Advanced computing for systems biology

Systems biology is based on computational modelling and simulation of large networks of interacting components. Models may be intended to capture processes, mechanisms, components and interactions at different levels of fidelity. Input data are often large and geographically disperse, and may require the computation to be moved to the data, not vice versa. In addition, complex system-level prob...

The Structural Invariance of a Model of Washback to Test Takers’ Perceptions and Preparation: The Moderating Role of Institutions

Test washback is held to be complex and multifaceted in that a host of cultural, social, individual, test, and institutional factors are involved in shaping it. Thus far, the majority of washback studies have had as their focus the role of teachers in test washback or washback to teachers. How educational environments or institutions might function in isolation or in interaction with other fact...

Distributed leadership: building capacity for interdisciplinary climate change teaching at four universities

Purpose Interdisciplinary approaches to climate change teaching are well justified and arise from the complexity of climate change challenges and the integrated problem-solving responses they demand. These approaches require academic teachers to collaborate across disciplines. Yet, the fragmentation typical of universities impedes collaborative teaching practice. This paper aims to report on th...
